Benefits of Supervision

In the 26 years I have been practicing therapy, and the 23 years I have been a supervisor, I have had training/supervision in some form nearly every week. I believe it is not only beneficial, but essential, for good practice.

Who can benefit from supervision/consultation?

  • An LSW who needs supervision in order to obtain LCSW licensing.

  • A trained psychotherapist who is comfortable working with individuals, but usually refers couples and families out.

  • A supervisor who needs occasional consultation for support and clarification around ethical issues.

  • Therapists who sometimes feel stuck and wish they could get a bigger picture of what is affecting their patients/clients.

  • A therapist who feels comfortable working with children, but wants to learn how effectively to engage parents in the process.

  • Family therapists who want to strengthen their ability to assess and to execute effective interventions.

  • Family therapists who want to develop more skills when working with individuals.

  • Clinicians who wish to use systemic thinking in order to provide more comprehensive assessments.

  • Therapists who wish to focus on relational issues in order to cultivate patient/client resources.

  • Clinicians who wish to develop and strengthen their own therapeutic voice.

Supervision in Action which uses experiential learning drawn from psychodrama is beneficial for clinicians. The "empty chair," and sculpting, in combination with observing videotaped sessions, are a particularly helpful and effective way for clinicians to learn how to think and to develop therapeutic skills.
